The New York University Women's Diving Team showed up eager to compete at the first day of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships on Wednesday, February 9, in Atlanta, GA. Hosted by Emory University, the competition will continue through Saturday, February 12.
The women's 1-meter dive was the lone event of day one and Violet divers
Issara Schmidt,
Katherine Nardone and
Ashlyn Winship competed in the morning preliminaries. Schmidt placed fifth with a score of 393.20 and Nardone scored 378.95, coming in ninth and just shy of a finals-qualifying ranking. Winship finished 14th in preliminaires, scoring 358.55.
Having advanced to the evening's finals, Schmidt continued to shine for NYU as she placed sixth on the 1-meter b0ard, scoring 406.90 and earning 24 team points for NYU.
"There are five easy dives followed by six hard dives," said Head Diving Coach
Todd Kolean. "We were good on the hard dives but faltered a little, uncharacteristically, on the easy dives. Issara continues to lead the team on the boards as a freshman.
Katherine Nardone was a little heartbreaker missing finals by a point and Ashlyn, a senior, dove well in a top-tier conference meet. Still, I couldn't me more proud of these divers."
Following the day's event, the Violets stand in second place overall with 57 points. The University of Chicago leads with 109 points.
The UAA Championships will continue tomorrow, February 9, with many freestyle events in men's and women's swimming in addition to the men's 3-meter dive.
