Nathan Bennett's 84th-minute game winner gave New York University's men's soccer team a 1-0 victory over Kean University at Gaelic Park on Tuesday night.
A light mist fell on the pitch as the two sides were gridlocked for the majority of the match, despite the Violets outshooting Kean 16-4 on the night.
It was NYU's second straight shutout after defeating eighth-ranked Carnegie Mellon University in the team's league opener this past Saturday.
Tonight's victory improved the Violets' record to 5-3-1 on the year as they look to build momentum entering the heart of the UAA schedule.
Neither side had many legitimate chances in the first half as just five shots were attempted through the first 45 minutes.
NYU picked up its aggressiveness in the second, however, making Kean's keeper Dillon Konzelmann work as he made seven saves in the half with multiple diving stops to keep the match scoreless.
The Violets' sense of urgency heightened with time dwindling, as
Arkan Tahsildaroglu had multiple attempts to break through from the near corner. It was in the 84th minute that he cracked the Cougars' back line, getting deep enough to send a close cross into the crease that Bennett snuck past Konzelmann for the game winner.
It was Bennett's third goal of the year and Tahsildaroglu's third assist while NYU successfully maintained most of the possession for the final six minutes to earn the win.
Luca Mancuso recorded the win in net for the Violets, saving both shots he saw on goal.
The squad jumps back into UAA action for its next match, hosting Case Western Reserve University at Gaelic Park on Saturday, October 8, at 4:00 p.m.
