Women's Volleyball Sweeps a Pair

#6 Violets Increase Winning Streak to Nine

The New York University women's volleyball team, ranked #6 in the nation, swept a pair of matches on Saturday, October 22.

The Violets faced host Stevens Institute of Technology and Kean University in Hoboken, NJ.

NYU defeated host Stevens in four sets (25-19, 25-20, 19-25, 25-22), then swept Kean (25-11, 25-20, 25-20).

In the match vs. Stevens, the Violets trailed by as many as three points in the first set. But, a kill by Haley Holz snapped a 13-13 tie and NYU never trailed again.

The Violets led the second set 20-10, but Stevens went on a streak and pulled within 23-20. However, a kill by Leela Anvekar and a Ducks' attack error ended the set.

Stevens earned the third-set victory by overcoming an early six-point deficit and ending on an 8-2 run.

The final set featured NYU getting out to a 5-0 start. Stevens made a strong comeback and pulled within 23-22 following a late 3-0 run. But, a kill and a service ace by Holz secured the NYU victory.

Holz finished the match with 11 kills and six service aces. Olivia Lewandowski led the way with 13 kills. Dominique Drust (19) and Azrael Ning (11) each had double-digit assists, while Lindsey Hirano (14) and Drust (13) each had double-digit digs.

In the sweep vs. Kean, the Violets never trailed in any of the sets. The match was completed on a kill and then a service ace by Gabriella Spaethling.

Lewandowski again led the way with 12 kills, as Holz added seven. Drust managed a team-high 24 assists, while Hirano's 15 digs were tops.

The Violets return to action this Tuesday, October 25, for a home match vs. Montclair State University. First serve is set for 7:00pm at St. Francis University in Brooklyn..
