New York University women's volleyball head coach
Andrew Brown secured his 100th career victory as the Violets defeated Montclair State University, 3-1, at St. Francis College-Brooklyn on Tuesday night.
NYU won by set scores of 25-20, 25-12, 16-25, 25-21 in its final home match of the 2022 regular season. Brown's career record at NYU now stands at 100-30 (.769) in his fifth season at the helm, although the 2020 campaign was not played due to the pandemic.
"This is a special team moment. For our program to achieve results like this comes from tons of dedication and sacrifices from the players, alumni and all our supporters," Brown said. "Especially our amazing assistant coaches who sacrifice so much to help guide our program to such heights."
The Violets already clinched the University Athletic Association (UAA) regular season title for the second consecutive year and are set to host the 2022 UAA Volleyball Championship next weekend.
Against Montclair tonight, NYU found itself in a close battle with a 15-13 lead in the first. The Violets responded with six unanswered points though, going on to win the set 25-20.
NYU carried this momentum into the second, going up 11-4 after back-to-back
Lindsey Hirano aces. A
Haley Holz ace later made it 17-6 Violets, as they hit an impressive .500 in the frame to run away with a 25-12 win and go up 2-0 in games.
The Redhawks didn't waver, using a 5-0 run in the middle of the third to take a 16-8 advantage. NYU never came closer than six for the remainder of the set as MSU made it interesting with a 25-16 victory.
A kill from
Ella Weider gave the Violets a 10-4 lead in the fourth as the hosts looked to prevent the match from going five. A 6-2 spurt from Montclair cut its deficit to two, 12-10, but the Violets never let MSU tie or take the lead as they pulled out a 25-21 triumph to secure Brown's milestone victory.
Weider tied her career high with 14 kills on efficient .522 hitting, while Holz and
Olivia Lewandowski delivered 13 kills apiece.
Rookie
Jessica Spierenburg totaled 10 kills (.533) for the first double-digit kill performance of her career.
Dominique Drust tied her career high with 24 assists, adding 10 digs for a double-double.
Azrael Ning also contributed heavily in the setting game, finishing with a season-high 19 assists.
Hirano has still never had less than 10 digs in a match in her career, posting 19 on the night.
The Violets conclude the 2022 regular season with a trip to Baltimore, MD, to play Johns Hopkins University and Virginia Wesleyan University on Saturday, October 29.
