Men's Basketball Falls in Overtime

Violets Defeated in Rochester 74-70

The New York University Men's Basketball Team opened its University Athletic Association (UAA) weekend slate with a 74-70 overtime loss to host University of Rochester on Friday, January 28, in Rochester, NY.

The Violets (9-6, 0-5) took their biggest lead, 13-4, early in the contest, but were behind 63-60 late. However, rookie Zay Freeney's three-pointer with just 12 seconds left sent the game into overtime.

The Yellowjackets (11-5, 3-3) scored the first four points of the extra session and led the rest of the way.

HIGHLIGHTS:

- Bobby Hawkinson finished with 26 points, a career-high 22 rebounds, four assists, and three steals. It was the senior captain's second 20-20 game of the season and 11th double-double which leads the UAA and ranks 12th in the nation.

- Freeney's game-tying three-pointer was one of three he made in the contest.

- Jacob Sussman also converted three three-pointers and finished with 15 points.

- Nick Macarchuk equaled Hawkinson with a team-high four assists.

NELSON NOTES:

"There are no moral victories, but our team showed great grit and competitive character," said Head Coach Dagan Nelson. "We will be ready for a very good Emory team on Sunday."

NEXT UP:

The Violets return to the court on Sunday, January 30, and face Emory University in Atlanta, GA. Tipoff is set for 12:00pm.
