The New York University Men's and Women's Swim Teams were back competing in the pool for the first time since December 5, and both squads made quite a splash.
Facing Stevens Tech on Thursday, January 13, in the first half of the two-day, home-and-home event, both NYU teams raced out to leads after the first nine events, which were held in Hoboken, NJ.
It was a dominating performance by the Violets, who swept each event and lead 140-27 (men) and 139-28 (women).
"It was great to be back in the pool and racing again," said Head Coach
Trevor Miele.
Gavin Egerton (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield) was a double-winner for the men's team, capturing the 200 freestyle (1:44.89) and the 200 IM (1:55.19).
"We went out and raced our hardest," Egerton said. "We have been working very hard through these uncertain times and today it paid off. We had great performances across the board and it was a great start to the two-day meet."
In a compelling 1,650 freestyle, freshman
Connor Vincent (Irvington, NY/Irvington) and All-American senior
Graham Chatoor (Glencoe, Trinidad/International School of Port Spain) went stroke for stoke before Vincent eked out the victory (16:22.82 to 16:23.00).
On the women's side, it was a complete celebration for senior
Ashley Brodnick (Raleigh, NC/Leesville Road), who also captured the 1,650 (17:47.28) while competing on her 22nd birthday.
"The highlight of my day was winning the race and then having my teammates sing happy birthday to me in the pool," Brodnick explained. "I'm very happy with my race and excited to see what we can do tomorrow."
Other individual winners for the women were
Gabriella Torres (Dobbs Ferry, NY/Dobbs Ferry) in the 200 freestyle (1:57.91),
Jolie LeFauve (Rockville, MD/Stone Ridge) in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.36),
Nika Kouznetsova (Hamilton, NJ/Mercer County Health Science) in the 50 freestyle (24.82),
Isabella Brosvik (Brentwood, TN/Ravenwood) in the 100 butterfly (57.44), and
Candice Saxod (Annecy, France/Dubai International Academy) in the 200 IM (2:12.35).
"It was a great overall performance today and I'm excited to see them swim again tomorrow," Miele added.
The venue switches to NYU's Palladium Athletic Facility for Friday's final day of competition. First event is set for 4:00 pm.
