Another game, another win for New York University's Women's Basketball Team as the Violets extended their season-opening win streak to eight games with an 89-48 triumph over Hunter College on Friday, December 10. NYU played at its former temporary home court, the Hunter College Sportsplex, in Manhattan as the
#10-ranked Violets continued their red-hot start to the season.
The Hawks came out of the gates strong, taking a 6-5 lead with 6:57 remaining in the first on a Maya Thompson jumper. Hunter extended their edge to 9-5 soon after as they held the Violets scoreless for 3:34 in the middle of the frame.
NYU found its groove to close the quarter, however, using a 10-5 spurt and a
Jenny Walker (Sausalito, CA/Redwood) bucket with eight seconds remaining to take a 15-14 advantage at the end of one.
The Violets used nine unanswered points over the opening 4:31 of the second to jump out to their first double-digit lead, 24-14. Hunter brought it back within single-digits on its next possession, but NYU bounced back quickly as a second-chance layup from
Taylor Huff (Glen Ellyn, IL/Glenbard West) with 15 seconds on the clock put the visitors up 37-22 at halftime.
As they've done in a lot of their contests this year, the Violets came out of the break with a new level of intensity and outscored the Hawks 23-7 in the third. NYU shot 10-for-20 from the field in the quarter while holding Hunter to a 27.3 percent clip (3-for-11) for a 60-29 advantage entering the final period.
NYU continued to roll in the fourth, opening the quarter on a 7-2 run to put the game further out of reach. The Violets scored 80-plus points for the sixth time this season, pushing their average to 83.5 points per game which ranks ninth in all of Division III.
Walker led the way with a 17-point, 10-rebound double-double (7-for-11 FG) while sharpshooter
Erica Miller (Alamo, CA/Carondelet) finished with 15 points (5-for-9 from three) as the only other Violet in double-figures.
Belle Pellecchia (Randolph, NJ/Rutgers Prepatory) stuffed the stat sheet yet again, totaling eight points, eight rebounds, five steals and three assists.
Natalie Bruns (St. Louis, MO/Kirkwood) added seven points while Huff,
Natalie Pence (Mount Kisco, NY/Fox Lane) and
Chloe Teter (Little Silver, NJ/Red Bank Regional) chipped in six points apiece.
NYU is back in action for its final home contest of the first semester on Sunday, December 12, hosting Brooklyn College at the Brooklyn Athletic Facility. Tip-off is slated for 2:00 pm.
