New York University's Women's Basketball Team scored a season-high 97 points in a 97-53 victory over Brooklyn College on Sunday, December 12, at the Brooklyn Athletic Facility.
It was the
#10-ranked Violets' (9-0) final home contest of the 2021 calendar year and they finished strong, holding Brooklyn (6-2) without a field goal in both the second and fourth quarters to secure their ninth double-digit win in as many games.
"It was a really impressive second quarter for us defensively which turned the tide of the game," said Head Coach
Meg Barber. "Our bench production, scoring 51 points against a solid defensive team was really the difference-maker today."
Jenny Walker (Sausalito, CA/Redwood) led the way for NYU, scoring a season-high 20 points (7-for-10 FG, 6-for-8 FT) along with eight rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks.
The first quarter was closely contested as Gianna Gotti scored the Bulldogs' first two baskets, putting them ahead 4-2 just over a minute in. NYU created some separation over the middle of the frame with
Mary Kate Fahey's (Arlington Heights, IL/John Hersey) fastbreak jumper giving them a 15-9 lead with 3:30 remaining.
Brooklyn responded with eight unanswered points to go back on top, 17-15, late in the period. A pair of Walker free-throws with three seconds on the clock then tied the score at 21-21 entering the second.
NYU completely stifled the visitors' offense in the second, outscoring Brooklyn 28-4 in the quarter while holding them to 0-for-16 shooting from the floor. The Violets hit 11 of their 20 shot attempts in the frame, leading to 49-25 halftime advantage.
Brooklyn's season scoring leader Chanel Jemmott fouled out with 6:53 left in the third, eliminating the Bulldogs' top offensive threat and swinging the momentum further in NYU's favor. The Violets entered the fourth leading 72-46, on the verge of another lopsided win.
NYU's defense stayed locked in during the final frame, holding Brooklyn to 0-for-15 shooting in the quarter as the Violets ran away for their third-straight 40-point victory.
"I thought Brooklyn did a great job with their intensity to start the game," Barber added. "Once again, our depth and how hard we play for 40 minutes just proved to be too much."
Jordan Janowski (Woodcliff Lake, NJ/Saddle River Day School) and
Brooklyn Shelton (Botetourt, VA/Lord Botetourt) contributed 11 points each while
Natalie Bruns (St. Louis, MO/Kirkwood) pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds.
Bianca Notarainni (San Diego, CA/La Jolla Country Day School) registered season highs of eight points (4-for-6 FG) and eights boards while
Taylor Huff (Glen Ellyn, IL/Glenbard West) also notched eight points in just 10 minutes of play.
Honor Culpepper (Tampa, FL/Plant) had a quality game off the bench as well, scoring a career-high-tying five points and corralling a career-best eight rebounds.
Next up for the Violets is their final road non-conference game of the season, taking on Baruch College on Thursday, December 30, in Manhattan at 2:00 pm.
