The New York University baseball team opened up its 2020 season by scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull away from Roger Williams University (RWU) and defeat the Hawks 6-2 on Sunday, March 1, at MCU Park in Brooklyn.
Gabe Golob (Encino, CA/Harvard Westlake) was the Violets' opening day starting pitcher and tossed seven innings, scattering three hits and fanning 11 batters, all while allowing just one run.
"The old saying is start with good pitching, and we did that today," said Head Coach
Doug Kimbler. "Gabe gave us a solid seven innings and a chance to win."
The score was tied 1-1 going into the home half of the sixth when NYU plated four to break the game open. The big blow was a two-run double by
Coltrane Tait (Newport Beach, CA/Sage Hill).
Tait, who added an RBI single in the eight to complete the scoring, went 2-for-4, as did
Ford Ladd (Longmont, CO/Niwot).
"Tait really grinded all of today," added Kimbler. "He fouled off some really good pitches and then barreled up a pitch that gave us the lead for good."
The Violets return to action on Thursday, March 5, when they head to Wayne, NJ, to take on William Paterson University. First pitch is set for 3:00 pm.
