Violets Defeated by Spartans on Sunday

The New York University men's basketball team was defeated by Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) 90-60 in a University Athletic Association (UAA) game on Sunday, February 9, in Cleveland, OH.

NYU (8-12, 1-8)  led early following a pair of layups by Cade Hoppe (El Dorado Hills, CA/Oak Ridge) and  Jaden Narwal (Vancouver, Canada/Collingwood School). But the Spartans (11-9, 4-5) jumped out to a 17-9 lead and never looked back.

CWRU was ahead 47-22 at halftime, but the Violets never got closer than 24 points the rest of the way.

The Spartans shot 45.5% (15-of-33) in the second half and eventually coasted to the double-digit victory.

Cole Frilling was 7-of-13 from three-point-range for CWRU and helped the Spartans pull away in the second half. He finished with a game-high 19 points and was joined in double figures by Antonio Ionadi (17 points), Ryan Newton (12 points) and Robert Faller (11 points).

Hoppe was NYU's leading scorer on Sunday as he tallied 17 points to go along with two rebounds and a block. Narwal (16) and Ethan Feldman (New York, NY/The Salisbury School) (10) also scored in double figures.

Bobby Hawkinson (Frankfort, IL/Marist)  collected a team-high 12 rebounds.

NYU finished the UAA weekend 1-1 having defeated Carnegie Mellon, 80-79, on Friday night.

The Violets return to action on Friday, February 14, when they travel to Atlanta, GA, to face Emory University for another UAA contest. Tip-off is set for 8:00pm.
