Women's Basketball Wins Final Home Game

Violets Beat Bears 95-42

The New York University women's basketball team played its final home game of the 2019-20 season and defeated Washington University in St. Louis 95-42 on Sunday, February 23, at the Sportsplex in Manhattan.

NYU (19-5, 9-4) scored the first 17 points of the University Athletic Association (UAA) game and never trailed.

"I'm very proud of the way we came out and played against Wash U. like this," said Head Coach Meg Barber. "This was a big win for us."

The Bears' (14-10, 7-6) first bucket came with just under one minute to play in the opening quarter, and NYU led 17-2 after the first.

Brooklyn Shelton (Botetourt, VA/Lord Botetourt) scored seven points in the Violets' 12-2 run to begin the second quarter as the NYU lead grew to 25 points.

The Violets' advantage increased to 29 points, 42-13, on Shelton's three-pointer with just over a minute to play in the quarter as NYU went on to lead 42-15 at halftime.

Annie Barrett's (Cambridge, MA/Buckingham Browne & Nichols) three-pointer with 1:45 remaining put NYU ahead by 44 points, 68-24, en route to a 71-31 lead after three quarters.

The barrage continued through the final quarter as the lead ballooned to a game-high 53 points on Erica Miller's (Alamo, CA/Carondelet) three-pointer in the final minute, giving NYU a team-record 16 for the contest.

Janean Cuffee (New York, NY/The Lawrenceville School) scored a game-high 20 points for NYU, while Barrett just missed a triple-double with 10 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds.

Shelton, who scored all of her points in the second quarter, finished with 16, and Jenny Walker (Sausalito, CA/Redwood) added 14. Miller connected on all four of her field goal attempts and finished with nine points as did Alyssa Alvarez (Daly City, CA/Convent of the Sacred Heart). Katie Foos (Rumson, NJ/Rumson-Fair Haven Regional) scored eight points as 11 different Violets scored at least two points.

Sammi Matoush led the Bears with 11 points.

Barrett, along with fellow senior Mikaela Read (University Park, TX/Highland Park), who received the first start of her career, were honored in a pre-game ceremony on Senior Day.

"Anyone who makes it four years, there's something special to be said about them," Barber said. "Annie and Mikaela are as selfless as they come and are incredible teammates."

The Violets, who are tied with Emory University for second place in the UAA, one game behind the University of Chicago, end the regular season on Saturday, February 29, when they face Brandeis University in Waltham, MA. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00pm.
