Men's Basketball Drops UAA Affair

Violets Fall to Chicago in Pleasantville

The New York University men's basketball team was defeated by the University of Chicago 69-59 in a University Athletic Association (UAA) game on Friday, February 21.

NYU (8-15, 1-11) hosted the contest at Pace University in Pleasantville, NY.

The Violets had a pair of one-point leads early in the game, but fell behind the Maroons (11-12, 6-6) by 15, 31-16, with less than three minutes to play in the first half.

However, Cade Hoppe's (El Dorado Hills, CA/Oak Ridge) jumper with just seconds remaining brought the Violets to within 33-21 at halftime.

Hoppe who finished with a team-high 22 points, scored NYU's first 10 of the second half. But, the Violets fell behind by 19 and were not able to pull within single digits until Jaden Narwal's (Vancouver, Canada/Collingwood School) put-back of his own shot with just 3:19 to play drew NYU to within nine, 60-51.

The Violets were not able to get any closer before suffering the 10-point loss.

Jimmy Martinelli (Glenview, IL/Glenbrook South) pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds for NYU while adding eight points. Bobby Hawkinson (Frankfort, IL/Marist) contributed nine points.

Cole Schmitz led Chicago with 15 points.

"We lost this game in the first half," said Head Coach Dagan Nelson. "We wanted to make them play from behind and we just couldn't do it."

The Violets return to the Sportsplex in Manhattan for their final home game of the season on Sunday, February 23. NYU will host Washington University in St, Louis on Senior Day, with tip-off scheduled for 12:00pm.
