The New York University men's basketball team was defeated by the University of Rochester 72-64 in a University Athletic Association (UAA) game on Sunday, February 16, in Rochester, NY.
The Yellowjackets (15-7, 6-5) scored the first six points of the game before
Cade Hoppe (El Dorado Hills, CA/Oak Ridge) put NYU (8-14, 1-10) on the scoreboard with a layup.
After Rochester increased its lead to 17 points, 30-13, with 9:01 left in the half, NYU went on a 12-5 run highlighted by a pair of three-pointers from
Jaden Narwal (Vancouver, Canada/Collingwood School) and
Nick Macarchuk (Alamo, CA/St. Thomas Moore Prep) that cut the lead to eight, 33-25.
But, Rochester went into the locker room ahead 39-28 at the half.
NYU bounced back in the second half, going on a late 16-5 run including a Macarchuk three-ball that brought the squad within three (57-54) with 5:27 left in the game. Unfortunately NYU was unable to get ahead of Rochester.
"Our inability to get timely rebounds really hurt us today," said Head Coach
Dagan Nelson." That, paired with the 14 more free throws Rochester shot, was the biggest difference in the game."
NYU shot 14-for-27 (51.9%) from the field compared to Rochester's 7-for-22 (31.8%) over the last 20 minutes of action.
Hoppe led NYU with a game-high 18 points and six rebounds. Macarchck (14) and Feldman (10) also scored in the double figures for the Violets.
Ryan Algier led five Yellowjacket players in double digits with 14 points.
"We will regroup and prepare for University of Chicago starting tomorrow," Nelson added.
NYU returns to the court on Friday, February 21, when it hosts The University of Chicago. Tip-off is scheduled for 8pm at Pace University in Pleasantville, NY.
