Women's Swimming & Diving Finishes Second in UAA Championships

Collins Named UAA Women's Swimmer of the Year

Official Results

The New York University women's swimming & diving team has closed out competition in the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships, which were hosted by the University of Chicago Wednesday-Saturday, February 12-15, in Chicago, IL.

After four days of competition, the Violets ultimately finished a close second out of eight teams with 1,532.50 points. Emory University ended up in first place with 1,686.50 points, while host Chicago was third with 1,481.

NYU's swimmers finished the championships by earning 10 more NCAA cuts on Saturday. The women got off to an incredible start in the 1,650-yard freestyle as five Violets: Rachel Reistroffer (Spartanburg, SC/Dorman) (16:55.39), Ashley Brodnick (Raleigh, NC/Leesville Road) (17:00.26), Jaime Robinson (Cheshire, CT/Sacred Heart Academy) (17:10.13), Allison Kapostasy (Cincinnati, OH/Turpin) (17:10.47), and Tillie Lewis (Richmond, VA/Deep Run) (17:20.12), all cracked the top 10 and earned cuts.

"We had a big night," remarked Head Coach Trevor Miele. "Everyone swam well and we got a lot of NCAA cuts."

In the next event, the 200-yard backstroke, Sydney Catron (Alexandria, VA/Bishop O'Connell) won her second individual event of the meet after finishing in a time of 1:58.92, a new team record. Jessica Flynn (Charlotte, NC /Charlotte Latin School) followed up with a solid 100-yard free that saw her finish third with a time of 51.57. This finish was the final clincher for Flynn, who was later named UAA Women's Co-Rookie of the Year.

Next up was Honore Collins (Evanston, IL/Evanston Township), who ended her time in the championships the same way she started it, by breaking a UAA record. This time, the record came in the 200-yard butterfly (2:01.07), coincidentally the same event she set the pool record in last year. Isabella Brosvik (Brentwood, TN/Ravenwood) also competed in the event and finished third (2:03.22)

For her outstanding performance over the last few days, Collins was named UAA Women's Swimmer of the Year for the second consecutive season.

"Sydney just dominated the 200 back and Honore crushed the UAA record in the 200 fly." added Miele.

In the last event of the championships, Catron, Flynn, Victoria Saliba (River Edge, NJ/River Dell), and Collins teamed up for the 400-yard freestyle relay, taking second place after finishing in a time of 3:24.94.

After leading their team to so much success during the championships, NYU's coaches were named UAA Women's Coaching Staff of the Year.

In total, NYU's swimmers and divers managed to earn 27 NCAA cuts during the championships.

The women will have one last tune up before the NCAA's, hosting the NYU Last Chance Meet on Saturday, February 22, at the Palladium Athletic Facility.
