The New York University men's volleyball team won its fourth-straight match of the 2020 season. The Violets, currently ranked #8 in the nation by the American Volleyball Coaches Association, defeated #10 Arcadia University, in four sets on Thursday, January 23, in Glenside, PA.
After dropping the first set to the Knights (1-2) 25-14, the Violets (4-0) took the next three by scores of 25-22, 25-23, 25-19.
NYU trailed Arcadia only once in the final set (5-4), with the two teams tying things up at several points. The Violets eventually took a four-point lead,16-14, and never looked back.
"It was a really good team win tonight," said Head Coach
Jose Pina. "We played a tough opponent who knew how they wanted to perform in their first home match of the season."
Overall, the Violets hit at a .262 clip for the match, while the Knights were held to .232.
"Our experience and talent level enabled us to avoid our first loss," said Pena. "Our talent took over and did what we needed to do to win."
Alex Li (Cupertino, CA/Monta Vista) and
Evan Lindley (Evanston, IL/Evanston Township) paced NYU with 10 kills each, while
Gautham Dasari (Cupertino, CA/Cupertino) had eight.
Tyler Flood (Corona del Mar, CA/Corona del Mar) led the way with a .600 hitting percentage with
Ryan Whealen (Fenton, MO/St. Louis University) right behind at .500. Lindley also contributed three service aces and a team-high nine digs.
Whealen registered 27 assists in setting up the NYU attack.
"
Gautham Dasari (Cupertino, CA/Cupertino) performed well for starting in his first match tonight," Pina added. "We showed a lot of character in this match and we hope to continue to do so this season."
The Violets return to action Tuesday, February 4, when they host Baruch College. First serve at the Brooklyn Athletic Facility is set for 7:00pm.
