The New York University men's soccer team earned a 2-1 overtime victory over the visiting Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday, September 28, in Riverdale, NY.
Stevens opened up the scoring in the 55th minute of play when a ball off the boot of Bruno Andino tipped off of NYU goalkeeper
Nick Vafiadis (Englewood, NJ/Bergen Catholic) and found the back of the net.
The Violets had the edge statistically in the first half, taking six shots to only three for the Ducks.The Violets and Ducks each took three corner kicks over the game's first 45 minutes.
NYU began its scoring in the 85th minute when
Owen Smith (Laguna Beach, CA/St. Margaret's Episcopal School) headed a ball off of a corner kick from
Sergio Monton (Madrid, Spain/Fundacion Fomento) that landed in the left corner of the net, forcing the game to go into overtime.
The Violets secured the victory in the 105th minute when
Talal Said (Amman, Jordan/King's Academy) received a cross from Monton and blasted a ball past Stevens' goalkeeper Aedan Boriotti.
"The team showed a lot of grit in today's exciting win," said Head Coach
Kim Wyant. "We were able to use a lot of our bench which shows how deep the talent is on our team."
The Violets are now 3-4-1 this season, while the Ducks fell to 6-3-1.
The sqaud is back in action on Saturday, October 5, when they start University Athletic Association (UAA) competition against Case Western Reserve University. That matchup is slated for 8 pm at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY.
