The New York University men's soccer team posted a 3-0 victory over Case Western Reserve University as the Violets opened University Athletic Association (UAA) play on Saturday, October 5, at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY.
NYU (4-4-1, 1-0 UAA) struck early and late in the first half to distance themselves from the Spartans (5-4-2, 0-1).
Just 10:28 into the contest,
Isaiah Boyd (Charlotte, NC/Mallard Creek) took a pass from
Ethan Pizano (Singapore/Singapore American School) and lifted a high-arching shot past Case goalkeeper Jackson Kallen. Then, with less than a minute remaining in the opening half,
Sergio Monton (Madrid, Spain/Fundacion Fomento) scored on a free kick from just outside the box.
Monton now has two goals and leads the team with four assists and eight points this season. Boyd's tally was his first of the campaign.
Another Violet got his first goal of the season at 73:33 when
Ben Green (London, United Kingdom/Campbell Hall) connected on a breakaway after taking a lead pass from Monton.
"There is certainly a heightened sense of importance when you're playing against a conference opponent," said Head Coach
Kim Wyant. "But, we emphasize the importance of every single game we play. But, we knew they'd be good and we had to step it up."
Luca Mancuso (Miami, FL/Montverde Academy) was busy in net for NYU, recording eight saves while notching his first win of the season.
"I had a great defensive line in front of me tonight," Mancuso said. "Everyone was on their toes from the first minute. Everyone really showed up."
After dropping their first four games of the season, the Violets are now 4-0-1 in their last five.
"We've been building a lot of momentum and working hard," Wyant explained. "It didn't show early in the season. But the game plan is being implemented and now we're getting results."
The Violets return to the pitch next Saturday, October 12, when they travel to Pittsburgh, PA, to face Carnegie Mellon University in another UAA contest. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30pm.
