Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Team Records First Win

Violets Top Maritime 1-0

The New York University men's soccer team recorded its first win of the 2019 season, defeating Maritime College 1-0 on Wednesday, September 18, in the Bronx, NY.

The Violets are now 1-4-1, while Maritime fell to 5-4.

The game remained scoreless until Victor Kang (Seoul, South Korea/Kent School (Kent, CT)) scored his first collegiate goal with less than 10 minutes to play. After taking a pass from Oliver Kleban (Denver, CO/Blind Brook), he was able to streak through several Maritime defenders and left-foot the ball past Privateer goalkeeper Michael Rodriguez.

"Victor had come in with fresh legs and was dangerous from the moment he came in," said Head Coach Kim Wyant. "He had found pockets of space and was able to get off a fantastic shot earlier which didn't go in. On the winning goal, he showed excellent composure placing the ball neatly in the corner to beat their goalkeeper."

Both goalkeepers had been perfect up until that point. The Violets' Nick Vifiadis finished with three saves, recording his first career win and shutout. Rodriguez made five saves as NYU out-shot Maritime 16-4.

Sergio Monton (Madrid, Spain/Fundacion Fomento) took a team-high three shots for NYU, with two of them landing on net.

"Everyone played well," Wyant added. "We stayed focused and finally broke their compact and aggressive defense."

The Violets return home to Gaelic Park and host Hunter College this Saturday, September 21, at 2:30pm.
