The New York University women's soccer team, ranked #15 in the nation by the United Soccer Coches, suffered a 2-1 loss to visiting University of Scranton on Wednesday, September 18, at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY.
Scranton (1-1-3) opened up the scoring in the 20th minute of action when a ball off the boot of Stephanie Lowrey found the back of the net off of a cross from Lauren Holden.
The Violets (4-2) answered back in the 35th minute of play when a long ball from Alex Benedict (Avon, CT/Avon) soared passed Scranton goalkeeper Amanda Steinberg and found the back left corner of the net.
The Lady Royals' produced their second goal in the 68th minute when a ball deflected off of Violets' goalkeeper Sophia Danielsen (Coral Springs, FL/Pine Crest School)'s hands and Scranton's Callie Deola tapped the rebound back over her head.
NYU led Scranton in shots, 13-7, but it wasn't enough as the Lady Royals secured the 2-1 victory.
"Tough result tonight, although we had some very good moments," said Head Coach Michele Canning. "We made some mistakes that were costly, but we know what we need to do to keep improving."
The Violets return to action on Saturday, September 21, when they host Centenary University back at Gaelic Park. Kickoff against the Cyclones is slated for 12:00pm.
