The New York University baseball team dropped both ends of a University Athletic Association (UAA) doubleheader to visiting Case Western Reserve University on Saturday, April 6, at MCU Park in Brooklyn.
The Spartans (15-8, 2-2 UAA) took game one 6-5 and then completed the sweep over NYU (13-5, 0-2 UAA) with a 6-0 victory in game two.
In the opener, the Violets trailed 4-1 heading into the bottom of the second inning. But, they scored a pair of runs on a two-RBI double from
Ryan McLaughlin to cut the deficit to one. The score remained 4-3 for much of the contest until
Jack Elias' run-scoring single tied the game at 4-4. Then, in the bottom of the eighth, NYU took the lead as a pair of freshmen,
Grant Berman and
Zane Baker, each collected hits, with Baker's scoring Berman.
However, CWRU tied the game with a home run to lead off the ninth and took the lead later in the inning, ultimately holding on to win the game 6-5.
The Violets' offense couldn't solve Spartans' starter Nick Denove in game two. Denove tossed a complete game shutout, allowing just five hits to lead his team to the sweep. CWRU scored two runs in the second inning to give Denove an early lead and tacked on an insurance run in the fifth inning and three more in the seventh to add even more cushion.
Elias had three hits in the two games to lead the NYU offense.
NYU and Case Western Reserve will complete their four-game series with another doubleheader on Sunday. First pitch of game one is slated for 9:30am back at MCU Park.
