Men's Volleyball Wins on Senior Day

Violets Defeat Bard in UVC Match

The New York University men's volleyball team defeated Bard College in a United Volleyball Conference match-up on Saturday, March 16, at NYU's Brooklyn Athletic Facility.

The Violets (10-8, 6-2) won the Senior Day match in straight sets (25-17, 25-11, 25-21) over the Raptors (2-14, 0-9).

NYU scored the first three points of the opening set and never trailed. The Violets were ahead 21-17 before closing out the set with the final four points.

The second set was total dominance for NYU, as again the home team never trailed and led by as many as 14 points on three occasions.

Bard took its first lead of the match by scoring the first two points of the final set. Then, trailing 3-2, the Violets scored the next three points to take the lead for good. NYU went up by as many as six points, but a late run brought the Raptors to within one, 21-20. However, the Violets then scored the next three points. After Bard staved off one match point, James Haag sealed the deal for NYU with a kill.

NYU's two seniors, Ethan Talkov and Brendan Duggan, were honored before the match along with team manager Vivian Lee. Each player led the Violets with 11 kills, recording attack percentages of .667 and .600, respectively.

Ryan Whealen had team-bests of 32 assists and four digs for NYU.

"Today was great for the team's confidence after a tough defeat last night (to New Paltz)," said Head Coach Jose Pina. "It was also a great day for our seniors. They both played extremely well and showed what they are capable of doing on the court."

The Violets now go on a two-week hiatus before returning to action on Saturday, March 30, when they will host a tri-meet at the Brooklyn Athletic Facility. NYU faces Arcadia University at 1pm and St. Joseph's College-Long Island at 5pm.
