Women's Volleyball Wins on Senior Day

Violets Defeat Baruch 3-0

The New York University women's volleyball team defeated Baruch College 3-0 as the Violets celebrated Senior Day on Tuesday, October 15, at the Brooklyn Athletic Facility in Brooklyn, NY.

The Violets (19-5) won their fourth-straight match and snapped the Bearcats' (12-5) four-match winning streak.

With four-year seniors Sabrina Krebs (Beijing, China/Western Academy of Beijing), Caroline Rapp (Boynton Beach, FL/American Heritage School) and Kelsey Kraetz (Skaneateles, NY/Skaneateles) playing at home for the final time, NYU swept the match by scores of 25-14, 25-15, 25-15.

Baruch got off to a quick start in the first set, racing out to a 4-0 lead. However, the Violets came back to tie the score at 6-6 and then take their first lead. After the Bearcats scored the next point, NYU followed with the next five to take the lead for good and increase it to as many as 12 points.

NYU took an early three-point lead in the second set. But, six ties ensued before the hosts snapped a 10-10 deadlock with three straight points to grab the lead for good.

The Violets scored the first two points of the final set, but the Bearcats then reeled off four straight. However, that was their last lead as NYU scored the next three points and never trailed again.

"I thought we played well against another good non-conference opponent," said Head Coach Andrew Brown. "It was great to see our seniors play well. They've been working extremely hard and it shows in our record."

Maddie DeJong (Houston, TX/Second Baptist School) led the Violets with 11 kills while also hitting at a .529 clip. Veronica Johnson (Santa Monica, CA/Santa Monica) (17) and Nicole Dao (Bethesda, MD/The Academy of Holy Cross) (16) each had double-digit assists. Johnson also finished with 11 digs.

As for the seniors, Rapp contributed eight kills and nine digs, while Kraetz had six kills and a team-high seven block assists. Krebs also saw significant playing time in the victory.

"This was a great way to end the home season, and now we're excited for the final UAA round robin and finishing out the season strong," Brown added.

The Violets return to action this Sunday, October 20, in Cleveland, OH, for UAA Round Robin #3. NYU faces its University Athletic Association opponents Carnegie Mellon University at 12:00pm and Brandeis University at 2:00pm.
