The New York University women's volleyball team split its two matches at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Round Robin #3, hosted by Case Western University in Cleveland, OH, on Sunday, October 20.
The Violets (20-6, 3-4 UAA) dropped a four-set match to Carnegie Mellon University 25-22, 16-25, 25-17, 26-24) before rebounding to defeat Brandeis University in another four-set match (25-19, 25-19, 21-25, 25-22).
In the opening match,
Maddie DeJong (Houston, TX/Second Baptist School) led NYU with 19 kills, while
Haley Holz (Palatine, IL /Palatine) added 12. Another pair of Violets,
Nicole Dao (Bethesda, MD/The Academy of Holy Cross) (24) and
Veronica Johnson (Santa Monica, CA/Santa Monica) (15), recorded double-digit assists. Dao (14) and Holz (11) also totaled double-digit digs, with
Jacqueline Kupeli (Danville, CA/Monte Vista) leading the way with 19.
NYU had a pair of five-point leads in the fourth set, but could not hold on to force a fifth.
In the second match, the Violets took a two-set lead, dropped the third, but rallied in the fourth to defeat the Judges.
DeJoing again led the team with 12 kills. Dao had a team-high 23 assists, while Kupeli (13) and
Amy Zhang (Cary, NC/Green Hope) (11) had double-digit digs.
"We fought hard today and were able to finish our UAA season with a better record than last year, which has us trending in the right direction," said Head Coach Andre Brown. "Overall great effort by the team today."
The Violets take a short break before returning to action when they compete at the New York Region Challenge in Rochester, NY. They will face Fredonia State University and host Rochester Institute of Technology on Friday, November 1, then take on SUNY Cortland and Nazareth College, on Saturday, November 2.
