The New York University women's basketball team suffered a 69-61 setback to host Brandeis University in both teams' University Athletic Association (UAA) opener on Saturday, January 5, in Waltham, MA.
Brandeis (5-6) led 33-25 at halftime, but an early third-quarter run by the Violets (7-3) gave the visitors their first lead of the game, 39-37, with 4:15 left in the period. The Judges answered, however, scoring the next 17 points and led by a comfortable 15 points early in the fourth quarter.
Janean Cuffee scored the next 11 points of the contest to get NYU within four with just over 4:00 on the clock, but the Violets were unable to cut the margin any lower before ultimately falling by eight to the Judges.
Cuffee led all scorers with a career-high 28 points and was joined in double figures by
Katie Foos, who chipped in with 16 points off the bench. Oliva Linebarger pulled down a game-high 11 boards, while
Annie Barrett dished out a game-best seven assists to go along with seven rebounds.
Brandeis was led by Camila Casanueva, one of four Judges in double figures, who finished with 15 points and eight rebounds.
Saturday's loss snapped the Violets' five-game winning streak.
NYU returns to action on Friday, January 11, when it travels to Cleveland, OH, for a UAA matchup against host Case Western Reserve University. Tip-off against the Spartans is slated for 6pm.
