Violets Fall to Case Western Reserve in UAA Action

The New York University women's basketball team was defeated by Case Western Reserve University 72-62 in a University Athletic Association (UAA) contest on Friday, January 11, in Cleveland, OH.

After trailing by as many as nine points in the first half, the Violets (7-4, 0-2 UAA) pulled to within one, 37-36, on Olivia Linebarger's layup with 7:36 remaining in the third quarter.

However, the Spartans (10-3, 2-0) scored the next 12 points to open up a game-high 13-point lead. NYU failed to score again until Katie Foos hit a three-pointer almost five minutes later.

The Violets trailed 54-46 heading into the fourth quarter, but kept chipping away at their deficit. Another Foos three-pointer brought NYU to within four, 64-60, with 2:43 remaining in the game.

Case Western's Kara Hageman then hit a three-pointer of her own, and Casey O'Connor's layup brought the Violets back within five.

However, those was the last points NYU put on the scoreboard as the Spartans cemented their victory by making five free throws down the stretch.

Foos led the Violets with 23 points, connecting on five of her six three-point attempts while shooting 9-of-12 overall from the field.

Janean Cuffee added 20 points for the visitors. Annie Barrett contributed team-highs of seven assists and 11 rebounds while playing all 40 minutes.

Hageman led the Spartans with 19 points and 15 rebounds.

The Violets are right back in action on Sunday when they face Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA. Tip-off is set for 2:00pm.
