Women's Volleyball Completes Play at UAA Round Robin

Violets Defeat Rochester in Four Sets

The New York University women's volleyball team played its third and final match at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Round Robin on Sunday, September 30, at Brandeis University in Waltham, MA.

After dropping two matches on Saturday, the Violets (12-6, 1-2 UAA) faced the University of Rochester (14-5, 0-3) on Sunday and defeated the Yellowjackets in fours sets (21-25, 25-15, 25-20, 25-19).

The Violets led by as many as six points in the first set, but could not maintain the advantage. In the second, NYU raced out to a 4-0 lead and were never caught.

The third set was tied 18-18 when NYU went on a 5-0 run en route to the victory.

In the final set, the Violets trailed by two early. However, NYU soon broke a 7-7 tie with a 6-1 run and led the rest of the way.

"Our team did a great job of battling early on in sets to create separation," Head Coach Andrew Brown suggested. "I thought today our block did a great job at establishing a physical presence at the net. Both our middles were also very efficient at earning points with big swings. That was a big testament to our ability to control the ball in serve receive with all of our passers."

Three Violets finished with double-digit kills: Abby Ausmus (13), Gretchen Kincade (10), Nazzerine Waldon (10). Daryl Mitchell had a match-high four service aces and added 15 assists. Stella Alverson had a team-high 20 assists.

"Our setters did a great job at distributing our offense across the board and Daryl Mitchell did a great job putting pressure on Rochester with her serve." Brown explained.

Double-digit digs were recorded by Jessie Tsang (18) and Waldon (14).

"Overall, this weekend shined a light on what our team is capable of doing this season in the UAA," Brown said. "We will continue to work hard in practice to build off this result. Today was a big step for the future of NYU women's volleyball program,"

The Violets return to action this Tuesday, October 2, when they play at Farmingdale State College on Long Island. First serve is set for 7:00pm.
