Women's Soccer Opens UAA Season With Victory

Violets Defeat #13 Carnegie Mellon 1-0

The New York University women's soccer team defeated Carnegie Mellon University 1-0 in its University Athletic Association (UAA) opener on Saturday, September 29, at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY.

The host Violets have now won two straight and are 5-4 this season. The Tartans, ranked #13 by the United Soccer Coaches, are now 6-2-2.

Neither team was able to manage a shot on goal in a scoreless first half. However, when the Violets finally did put one one goal, it went past Carnegie Mellon goalkeeper Carolyn Botz and gave NYU a 1-0 lead. The tally was produced when Ashlyn Krygowski was able to control a loose ball in the box and connect on her fourth of the season.

"We played a very disciplined game and followed our game plan throughout," revealed Head Coach Michele Canning. "It was a great team effort."

Krygowski's shot on goal was the only one NYU managed all afternoon, but it was enough as Violet goalkeeper Meghan Marhan put aside the only shot she faced. Overall, the Tartans took eight shots to NYU's five.

Julia Raith led NYU with three shot attempts.

"This is a big win for us," Canning added. "The first UAA game against a really good team and we come away with a hard-earned victory. We earned the win today."

NYU returns to action this Tuesday, October 2, when the Violets host Rutgers-Newark University at Gaelic Park, The match-up is scheduled to begin at 7:00pm.
