The New York University women's soccer team scored three times in the first half en route to a 5-1 victory over visiting Vassar College on Sunday, September 2, at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY.
Five different Violets scored in Sunday's win, including
Jade Keane and
Francesca Pellerito, who each found the back of the net for the first time in their respective careers.
Alex Benedict started the scoring for NYU in the eighth minute when she fired a shot from the top of the box and beat the Vassar goalkeeper.
The Violets extended the lead to 3-0 later in the first half when
Julia Raith and Pellerito scored less than six minutes apart. Raith's tally came from almost 30 yards out, while Pellerito took a pass from
Maddie Peña and dribbled past the goalkeeper before shooting into an open net.
Rebecca Andrews cut the margin to two, 3-1, just before halftime, but that would be it for the Brewers' offense.
Second-half goals from
Isabelle Turner and Keane extended the lead to 5-1.
Sophia Danielsen made one save to earn her second victory of the season. NYU's defense only allowed two shots in Sunday's win and has allowed just five through two games this season.
The Violets return to action on Friday, September 7, as they head across the Hudson River to take on Stevens Institute of Technology at 5pm in Hoboken, NJ.
