A 90th minute goal from
Pablo Vargas lifted the New York University men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over host SUNY New Paltz on Saturday, September 8, in New Paltz, NY.
Vargas' goal was scored with less than 30 seconds remaining and gave the Violets (2-1-0) their second-consecutive one-goal win. A pair of Vargas' classmates,
Sergio Monton and
Isaiah Boyd, assisted on the tally and it was the first time in each of their young careers that they found the score sheet.
NYU took a 1-0 lead into halftime when another pair of freshmen,
Oliver Kleban and
Louis Meeks, contributed to a goal in the final minute of the opening half. Kleban scored the goal when he headed in a pass from his classmate Meeks. It was the second goal of the season for Kelban, while Meeks recorded his second assist of the year on the play.
New Paltz (3-1-0) tied the game in the 56th minute when Ryan Martinez converted a penalty kick, but that would be it for its offense.
The Hawks struggled to solve NYU goalkeeper
Grant Engel all game as the senior tallied five saves in his second win of the season. New Paltz goalkeeper Marc DePasquale made four saves in a losing effort.
"Grant made one back-to-the-bar spectacular save that kept the ball out of the net," said Head Coach
Kim Wyant. "And, our freshman really contributed today."
The Violets return right back to the pitch on Sunday when they take on Bard College in a neutral site game at New Paltz.
