Men's Basketball Falls to Chicago

Violets Return to Action Sunday for Senior Day

The New York University men's basketball team was defeated by the University of Chicago 75-66 in University Athletic Association (UAA) action on Friday, February 9, at the Sportsplex in Manhattan.

Collin Barthel exploded for 37 points to lead Chicago (10-11, 6-4 UAA) to a come-from-behind victory over the Violets (10-10, 3-7 UAA). Barthel was 12-for-18 from the field, 10-for-11 from the foul line and drained all three of his three-point attempts.

The Chicago senior's heroics helped the Maroons battle back from an NYU lead that was as high as 10 late in the first half and seven early in the second half.

NYU remained in control for much of the second half until a 7-0 Chicago run put the visitors ahead 51-49 with 11:08 remaining. The Violets answered immediately, however, as Jimmy Martinelli made a three-pointer to get the lead back and Dom Cristiano followed it up with a layup and a dunk to put NYU back ahead by five, 56-51, with 9:33 on the clock.

The Violets led 62-60 with just under five minutes to play when Barthel took the game over hitting back-to-back three-pointers followed by an old-fashioned three-point play that put the Maroons up 69-64 with 2:31 left.

Chicago sank all seven of its free throw attempts down the stretch to clinch the UAA win.

Jule Brown and Cameron Moore did a great job to shut down Chicago's Jake Fenlon, who entered the game averaging 17.3 points per game, which led the UAA. Fenlon had just two points at half time and finished the game with nine.

Ethan Feldman scored 23 points to lead NYU, while Cristiano added 20.

NOTABLES:

- Cristiano also pulled down 10 rebounds to complete a double-double performance.

- Feldman was 8-of-13 from the field and 2-of-4 from long range. The junior also made five-of-six from the foul line.

- Ross Udine finished with a game-high eight assists.

The Violets return to action on Sunday when they host Washington University in St. Louis at the Sportsplex at 12pm. Prior to the game Udine, NYU's lone senior, will be honored in the squad's annual Senior Day Ceremony.
