The New York University women's volleyball team traveled to Pamona, NJ, for the Stockton Tri-Match on Saturday, October 6. The Violets dropped a tough five-setter to Widener University before falling to host Stockton College in three close sets.
The Violets (13-9), who defeated Widener (12-12) in four sets earlier this season, fell to the Pride on Saturday 25-19, 23-25, 25-22, 22-25, 15-12 in their opening match.
Twice the Violets overcame one-set deficits in a classic back-and forth match. In the deciding fifth set, Widener raced out to a 3-0 lead. NYU caught up and the teams were tied at 5-5 when the Pride scored consecutive points and were able to maintain a lead the rest of the way.
A pair of Violets,
Nazzerine Waldon (13) and
Maddie DeJong (11), contributed double-digit kills, while three players
Daryl Mitchell (23),
Katie Goyette (14) and
Stella Alverson (10) had double-digit assists.
The Violets then played the host Ospreys (19-4) tough, but were nipped 28-26 in the first set before falling 25-22 and 25-17 in the next two.
NYU relinquished a five-point lead in dropping the opening set. The Violets then fell behind 9-1 in set two before coming back to pull within 23-22. However, an NYU attack error and a Stockton kill settled matters before the hosts went on to capture the final set.
"Widener did a good job on the defensive side of the ball, and Stockton was very efficient on offense." said Head Coach
Andrew Brown.
Against Stockton, Walden (10) again had double-digit kills, while Goyette (16) and Mitchell (14) totaled double-digit assists for a second time.
"Overall, we played well in moments but had a hard time stringing together points in the thick of sets," Brown explained. "With no mid-week matches coming up we are looking to reflect and work hard in practice as we head back into UAA play."
The Violets return to action when they compete in UAA Round Robin #2, hosted by Carnegie Mellon University, on Saturday and Sunday, October 13-14, in Pittsburgh, PA.
