Women's Basketball Suffers Road Defeat

Violets Fall to Wash U. Bears 84-69

The New York University women's basketball team fell to Washington University in St. Louis 84-69 in a University Athletic Association (UAA) road contest on Sunday, January 14, in St. Louis, MO.

After an early 3-3 tie, the Bears (10-4, 1-2 UAA) scored 10 straight. Trailing 24-14, the Violets (8-6, 1-2 UAA) scored the last five points and to pull within 24-19 after the first quarter.

Kaitlyn Read scored 12 of her game-high 29 points in that opening 10 minutes.

NYU moved to within three points on several occasions in the second quarter, but still trailed by four, 38-34, at halftime.

The Violets were able to pull even when Janean Cuffee hit a three-pointer with 1:32 left in the third quarter to notch the score at 50-50.

However, the Bears ended the quarter on 9-5 run to take a 59-55 lead, then scored the first four points of the fourth to open a 63-55 lead.

NYU soon fell behind by 11, but Read's driving layup with 3:36 left in the game brought the Violets to within five, 70-65, before Rachel Sondag's three-pointer with 2:20 remaining sparked a game-ending 14-4 run by the Bears and thwarted the Violets' final comeback attempt.
