The New York University baseball team played its first true road game of the 2017 season on Wednesday, April 19 and defeated the United States Merchant Marine Academy 4-3 in Kings Point, NY.
NYU improved to 15-9 on the season with the win, while the Mariners saw their record fall to 9-16.
The Violets plated their first run in the top of the third inning when
Ryan McLaughlin hit an RBI groundout to score
Jack Walter, who led off the inning with a double and stole third.
NYU led the rest of the way as
Coltrane Tait provided the rest of the offense, scoring two runs on a single in the fifth inning and the squad's final run on his third hit of the game in the seventh.
Sal Cammisuli,
Zach Cohen,
Ford Ladd,
Jarret Weiss, and
Matthew Millus combined to allow just three runs (one earned) on the afternoon.
QUICK HITS:
- Tait's three-RBI day marks the third time this season the freshman recorded multiple RBIs.
- Cammisuli started the game on the mound for the Violets and threw two scoreless innings before handing the ball to the bullpen.
- Weiss and Millus came out of the bullpen to pitch scoreless eighth and ninth innings, respectively. Millus earned his fourth save of the season and the 16th of his career.
The Violets return to action Friday when they open up a four-game University Athletic Association (UAA) series at Emory University in Atlanta. First pitch is slated for 3pm.
