Men's Basketball Suffers Defeat in Season Finale

Violets Fall to Brandeis 86-80

The New York University men's basketball team completed its 2016-17 season with an 86-80 loss to Brandeis University on Saturday, February 25, at the Sportsplex in Manhattan.

The Violets ended the campaign with a 7-18 overall record and a 2-12 mark in the University Athletic Association (UAA). Brandeis finished at (7-17, 4-10).

NYU never led in the contest.

Joe Timmes, the Violets only graduating senior, finished with a game-high 24 points in his final collegiate contest. He also totaled eight rebounds and three steals.

"Joe has been a great player for us and the epitome of an NYU student-athlete," said Acting Head Coach Taylor Roth. "He has worked incredibly hard and been a fantastic leader and example for our younger players."

Ross Udine became the 32nd player in Violet history to score 1,000 points when he hit a layup with 1:06 left in the first half, finishing with 22 points. Udine also recorded eight assists and now has 430 in his career. That is the second-highest total in program history, behind only Roosevelt Smith's 437.

"Scoring 1,000 points does not come by accident," Roth explained. "A lot of hard work and effort have led Ross to the success he has had."

NYU was trailing only 8-7 when the Judges went on a 35-20 run to open up a 16-point lead and then take a 45-32 lead at halftime.

Brandeis increased its advantage to a game-high 17 points, 68-51, midway through the second half.

The Violets made a run and cut their deficit to six points, 84-78, on Timmes' three free throws with 19 seconds left. However, the Judges' Jack Fay hit two foul shots two seconds later and Udine hit a layup with one second remaining for the final tally.

NOTABLES:

- Prior to the game, Timmes was honored in a ceremony as the Violets celebrated their lone graduating senior.

- Jimmy Martinelli snatched a team-high nine rebounds.

- Douglas Gertner finished with 13 points.

- Jordan Cooper led five Brandeis players in double figures with 21 points.

"Our guys worked hard all season and there was a lot of positives displayed by our young players," Roth concluded. "I'm already looking forward to next season and seeing the progress they will make."
