The New York University women's basketball team defeated host Hunter College 71-59 on Tuesday, December 12, in Manhattan.
Kayla Patterson led the Violets (5-4) with a season-high 22 points while adding 14 rebounds. It was her third consecutive double-double and her fourth of the season.
Kaitlyn Read finished with 20 points, eight rebounds, five assists, and six steals.
The Violets jumped out to an early 7-4 lead, but the Hawks (6-2) scored the next 11 points and went on to take a 15-11 lead after the first quarter.
NYU scored the first six points of the second quarter to retake the lead. After Hunter tied the game at 17-17, the Violets went on a 14-0 run to take their biggest lead of the game. They held the Hawks scoreless for more than four minutes during that stretch and went on to a 33-21 halftime lead.
Hunter came out firing in the second half, beginning the third quarter on a 15-5 run to pull within two points, 38-36. However, Read made a three-pointer, a layup and a free throw for the next six NYU points.
Mikaela Pyatt then hit a foul-line jumper with 25 seconds remaining and the Violets ended the quarter with a 46-39 advantage.
In the final quarter, the Violets extended their lead to as many as 13 points, 53-40, on a
Janean Cuffee jumper with 6:54 left in the game. NYU never led by less than five points the rest of the way.
