The New York University women's basketball team traveled across the Hudson River and defeated host Rutgers University-Newark 65-52 on Friday evening, December 15, in Newark, NJ.
NYU (6-4) scored eight-straight points late in the fourth quarter to turn a 53-51 lead into a comfortable double-digit advantage over the Scarlet Raiders (5-6). Four of those points came from graduate student
Kaitlyn Read, who tallied a game-high 26 points in the win.
The Violets took an 11-point lead early in the second half, but Rutgers-Newark was able to climb within two with 3:46 remaining. From there, Read took control of the game and helped lead NYU to its second-straight road victory. The three-time First Team All-University Athletic Association (UAA) honoree scored six points and dished out a pair of assists over the final four minutes.
NYU led 14-12 after 10 minutes and 34-29 at halftime, before scoring the first six points of the second half to lead by 11. The Scarlet Raiders cut the gap to eight at the end of the third quarter and the lead became just two after a Nicole Skelly three-pointer at the 3:46 mark. Read's late game heroics helped the Violets hold onto the lead and escape Newark with the win.
Read was joined in double figures by
Olivia Linebarger, who scored 10 points.
Faith Ashby led Rutgers-Newark with 15 points, while teammate Comfort Akinbo pulled down a game-high 15 boards.

- Read also tallied game-highs in assists (six) and steals (three).
