The New York University men's soccer team was defeated 5-1 in its first home University Athletic Association (UAA) contest of the season on Saturday, October 7, at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY.
The Violets (6-3-1, 0-2 UAA) scored the game's first goal, but could not hold the lead in falling to the Spartans (5-5-2, 1-1 UAA).
Maxi Rodriguez put NYU on top at the 15:01 mark. Matteo Carrieri-Russo began the scoring play by getting the ball to
Owen Smith, who then chipped it to Rodriguez who completed the process by beating the Case goalkeeper, Calvin Boyle.
However, that tally was followed by a pair of Spartan scores within a five-minute span. First, Zachary Senft headed a pass from Alex Besl past NYU keeper
Grant Engel at 28:13. Then, Seldon Magruder converted off of assists from Connor Weber and Jack Rademacher at 32:51.
The Spartan onslaught continued in the second half, as the visitors scored three goals within a seven-minute span. Michael Balog tallied at at 57:53 and 58:42, both on assists from Senft. Then, Magruder capped the scoring with an assist from Brian Woo at 64:35.
STATS-WISE:
- Engel made five saves.
- Smith led NYU with three shots, two of which were on net.
- Rodriguez's goal was his team-leading fifth of the season.
The Violets return to action on Monday, October 9, when they host Baruch College back at Gaelic Park. Kickoff is set for 7:00pm
