Women's Volleyball Falls at Hunter

Violets Return to Action with Four UAA Matches Next Weekend

The New York University women's volleyball team was defeated in straight sets by local-rival Hunter College on Friday, October 6, at the Sportsplex on the Upper East Side of Manhattan.

NYU (4-16), playing its second match in as many days, fell to Hunter (15-3) 25-20, 25-17, 25-21. The Violets defeated another New York City squad, Baruch College, on Thursday at the Brooklyn Athletic Facility.

The Hawks jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the opening set, but NYU stormed back to take a 6-5 advantage. Hunter rallied with six-straight points to go ahead 11-6 before another Violets' run put the visitors ahead 17-15. The Hawks were able to prevail, however, as they scored seven of the final nine points in the set to clinch a 25-20 first-set victory.

Hunter took control of the second set from the beginning, jumping out to a 19-6 lead. The Violets were able to gain momentum with an 11-5 run, but could not overcome the early hole as they ultimately fell 25-17, and the Hawks took a 2-0 lead in the match.

The third set was back-and-forth as neither squad led by more than four. NYU looked to be in control, leading the frame 19-15, before a late 10-2 run from the Hawks ended the match and gave Hunter its fourth-straight victory.

NOTABLES:

- Gretchen Cash led NYU with eight kills, while Kelsey Kraetz chipped in with seven.

- Zel Fortson finished with 14 assists, while Katie Goyette dished out 10.

- The match was NYU's third, and final this season, against an opponent from New York City. The squad finished the season 2-1 against NYC foes.

The Violets will return to action next Saturday, October 14, when they play the first two of four matches at the second University Athletic Association round robin. NYU will take on the University of Rochester at 10:30am (CT) in its first match of the day and follow it up with a 12:30pm (CT) tilt against the University of Chicago, which is hosting the two-day event.
