The New York University women's soccer team improved to 10-3-2 with a 4-0 victory over Centenary University on Monday, October 23, at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY.
NYU scored three goals in the first half to leave little doubt in the result, which extended its season-high unbeaten streak to six (5-0-1).
Maddie Pena found the back of the net just 2:10 into the contest to put the Violets ahead 1-0.
Marquel Love dribbled past several Centenary (11-4-0) defenders before finding an open Pena, who scored for the first time this season.
NYU doubled its lead to 2-0 in the 26th minute when
Julia Raith collected the ball 15 yards outside the box and struck a shot from long distance that landed in the top right corner of the goal. Exactly 15 minutes later,
Olivia Braender-Carr made the score 3-0 after knocking in a pass from
Tori Bianco.
With just under three minutes to play in the game,
Nalani Ogawa added to the Violets' lead as she deflected a free kick off the post and into the net. Ogawa, a defender, has scored twice this season.
Sophia Danielsen and
Michaela Brickley combined for three saves to post the shutout for NYU. Centenary goalkeepers Justine Stefura and Kaitlin Marold combined to make seven saves in a losing effort.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- NYU outshot the Cyclones 23-5, including 11-3 in shots on goal. Pena and Braender-Carr each had four shots to lead the offensive attack.
- Seven different Violets took at least two shots in the win.
- Raith leads all freshmen on the squad with three goals this season.
- The shutout was NYU's third in a row and 10th of the season.
The Violets return to action on Friday,October 27, when they host the University of Chicago in University Athletic Association (UAA) action. Kickoff is slated for 1:30pm back at Gaelic Park.
