The New York University women's soccer team spoiled Senior Day at the University of Rochester, defeating the hosts 2-0 in University Athletic Association (UAA) action on Sunday, October 15, in Rochester, NY.
NYU improved to 8-3-1 this season with the win and the Violets are now 2-1-1 in UAA action. Rochester drops to 6-6-1 overall and 0-4-0 in Association play.
The victory was NYU's first UAA road win since it defeated the Yellowjackets on October 30, 2015 in Rochester.
"We're excited about getting the points on the road," said NYU Head Coach
Michele Canning. "It's a tough weekend of travel and I thought our team did an excellent job of staying focused on our goals."
After a scoreless first half,
Isabelle Turner scored the game's first goal just over three minutes into the second half. The sophomore's fourth goal of the season was assisted by
Alex Benedict and
Charlotte Herbertz.
The Violets added an insurance goal in the 82nd minute when
Tori Bianco beat Rochester goalkeeper Emma Campbell. Bianco, who scored the game-winning-goal in last Saturday's UAA win over Case Western Reserve University, was assisted by
Ashlyn Krygowski.
Sophia Danielsen made a pair of saves to earn her third shutout this season. The Violets also benefited from a team save when Nolani Ogawa blocked a shot bound for the net.
FYI:
- Three different NYU goalkeepers have now combined for seven shutouts this season. In addition to Danielsen's three clean sheets,
Meghan Marhan and
Michaela Brickley each have a pair.
- Benedict improved her team-best point total to 15. The sophomore now has five goals and five assists this season.
- With three UAA games still to play, NYU has already surpassed its 2016 Association win total. The Violets were 1-2-4 in UAA action last season.
The Violets will put their four-game unbeaten streak (3-0-1) on the line when they return to action on Thursday, October 19, at Stockton University. Kickoff is scheduled for 7pm in Galloway, NJ.
