Baseball Shuts Out CCNY at Home

Violets Defeat the Beavers in Brooklyn

The New York University baseball team defeated the City College of New York on Friday, April 29, at MCU Park in Brooklyn, NY.

The Violets (15-21) shutout the Beavers (4-31) by a score of 9-0.

On the mound for the Violets was Chad Johnstone. The right-hander pitched six innings, allowing only one hit while striking out seven Beavers. Johnstone also had a perfect game into the top of the sixth inning.

"Chad came in throwing strikes and got ahead of hitters," said Head Coach Doug Kimbler. "I am sure that not only was this a big lift for him, this was a big lift for our team. We needed an outing like this."

The Violets came out swinging as they were able to score three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Jack Walter started things with a lead-off single and then scored on a Beavers' error. Jonathan Iaione brought home Colman Hendershot with a RBI triple down the leftfield line, then scored on a passed ball.

NYU was able to score again in the bottom of the fourth inning. Iaione started with a lead-off double and was brought home on a RBI groundout by Jeremy Wayne

The Violets' offense continued to produce in the seventh inning as they extended their lead on a RBI single from Walter, followed by a RBI double from Adrian Spitz. Spitz eventually scored on Iaione's sacrifice fly. Jack Elias kept the inning going with a single and scored on another RBI single from Wayne. The Violets took advantage of another Beaver error to tack on an additional run and conclude the scoring,

"Today we went back to playing how we always want to play" continued Kimbler. "Today we pitched well. We had timely hits and we played good defense. When you play like that, you are expect to win."

HIGHLIGHTS:

- Iaione went 2-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

"Jon has been having very good at-bats over the last few games," said Kimbler. "He is starting to hit the right pitches and I am glad to see how things are coming together for him."

- Johnstone recorded a career-high seven strikeouts.

- Jarret Weiss and Michael Anastasiou each pitched a scoreless inning of relief.

The Violets return to action on Saturday, April 30, for a doubleheader at home against Leman College. The first game is scheduled for 11:00 am and live stats will be available.
