The New York University men's volleyball team, ranked #13 by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA), suffered a four-set loss (25-22, 16-25, 25-18, 25-20) on the road to #5 Rutgers University-Newark on Tuesday night, March 29, in Newark, NJ.
NYU (12-12) dropped the first tightly-contested set, but carried that momentum to a dominant win in set number two. Unfortunately, the Scarlet Raiders (21-2) were able to close out the Violets and take the final two sets.
"It was a tough loss to an excellent Rutgers-Newark team," said NYU Head Coach
Jose Pina. "We played pretty well overall, but they just out-dug us and converted more of those digs into points. Their defense was better than ours tonight."
Chase Corbett stood out for NYU offensively. The sophomore middle hitter tied a career high and led the Violets with 12 kills on 21 swings with just four errors for a .381 hitting percentage.
Phil Bueno (10 kills, two blocks, seven digs) and
Derrick Chiu (39 assists, five digs) also contributed for the Violets.
HIGHLIGHTS:-
Nick Benson finished with nine kills and five digs.
-
Chase Klein notched eight kills and just one error on 17 swings to hit an efficient .412. The junior outside hitter added five digs and two solo blocks.
-
Sean Leahy registered seven kills and two errors on 15 attempts (.333 hitting percentage). The junior middle hitter also chipped in two assisted blocks.
NYU will return to action for a non-conference match in Poughkeepsie, NY, on Thursday night, March 31, against #8 Vassar College. The match against the Brewers is scheduled to begin at 7:00 pm.
