Baseball Drops Home Game to Ursinus

Violets Fall to Bears 7-4 at MCU

The New York University baseball team was defeated 7-4 by Ursinus College on Friday, March 18, at MCU Park in Brooklyn, NY.

NYU is now 4-10 on the season, while the Bears improve to 9-4.

"We're a program that needs to come in ready to play every single day," said NYU Head Coach Doug Kimbler. "Our guys just didn't show up to play today."

Both starters were solid through the first five innings, but the Bears chased Violets' starter Cameron Serapilio-Frank after six innings. The sophomore righthander allowed four runs -- one in the first, one in the second and two in the sixth -- on eight hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

Lou Aikins was on the bump for Ursinus and also went 6.0 innings, He allowed one run on three hits with three walks and four strikeouts.

NYU finally scored in the bottom of the seventh after trailing 5-0. With no outs and the bases loaded, Scott Hilbrant grounded into a 6-4-3 double-play, but CJ Picerni was able to score from third on the play..

The Bears scored two more in the top of the eight to jump ahead 7-1, but the Violets exploded for three in the home half to trim Ursinus' lead to 7-4.

With two outs, Colman Hendershot notched a double to left to start the rally. Jonathan Iaione followed with a single to shallow center for the Violets' first RBI of the game. Then, with the bases loaded, Ryan McLaughlin and Hilbrant notched back-to-back RBI walks.

Unfortunately, that was all the offense the NYU bats could muster.

HIGHLIGHTS:

- Picerni was the only Violet to record multiple hits. The senior captain finished 2-for-3 with a walk, a double and two runs scored.

- Hendershot finished the night 1-for-4 with a walk, a double and a run.

- Jeremy Wayne finished 0-for-1, but reached twice on walks and was hit by a pitch.

- McLaughlin was 1-for-1 with an RBI, a walk and was hit by two pitches.

- Matthew Millus tossed a perfect ninth inning for NYU. The sophomore reliever struck out two.

"Millus did throw a good ninth, but you never want to walk the leadoff hitter," continued Kimbler. "He battled back, though, and got three straight outs which is great to see from your closer."

The Violets will return to action on Wednesday, March 23, when they host Centenary College for a doubleheader at MCU Park in Brooklyn. First-pitch in game one is scheduled for 3:00 pm.

"These guys just need to get back to work for next Wednesday and be ready from the first pitch to the last," Kimbler said.
