Women's Volleyball Wins at UAA Championship

Violets Defeat Brandeis in Regular-Season Finale

The New York University women's volleyball team defeated Brandeis University in its final match of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship, which was hosted by Washington University in St. Louis on Friday and Saturday, November 4-5.

The Violets (16-16) outlasted the Judges (7-21) by scores of 25-23, 25-27, 25-13, 20-25, 15-10.

The first two sets were back-and-forth affairs, with both team possible winners until the final points. NYU grabbed the advantage by winning the third set before Brandeis came back to even the match.

The Violets fell behind 5-0 in the final set. However, they managed to tie the score 10-10 and then record the final five points to secure the match.

"That was a great comeback in the fifth set," said NYU Head Coach Jolie Ward. "The players found their groove and just pushed ahead."

HIGHLIGHTS:

- Gretchen Cash(ed) in with a match-high 22 kills. Caroline Rapp added 17.

- Katie Goyette led all players with 47 assists.

- Grace Napolitano tied for match-high honors with 21 digs.

- Rayne Ellis contributed a match-high seven blocks.

"We had great performances from Caroline, Gretchen and Rayne Ellis," Ward stated. "They came together at the end when things were tough. They believed in themselves and made it happen."

Saturday's match was NYU's final regular-season contest of the 2016 season. The Violets are still eligible for consideration for the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship Tournament.
