Championship Bracket
The New York University women's volleyball team won its opening match of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Championship, defeating New Jersey City University on Wednesday, November 9, at NYU's Brooklyn Athletic Facility in Brooklyn, NY.
The Violets (17-16) triumphed over the Gothic Knights (15-15) in straight sets (25-12, 25-11, 25-15)
NYU jumped out early in the first set and was never really threatened. The Violets scored the first two points and never trailed. They broke a 2-2 tie with an 8-1 streak and continued to increase their lead until taking the set by 13 points.
The second set was more of the same as NYU again scored the first two points and never trailed. Eventually, the home squad used a 7-0 to again put the set out of reach. The Gothic Knights never got closer than seven the rest of the way as NYU went on to lead by as many as 14 points.
In the final set, it was New Jersey City getting off to the quick lead. The Gothic Knights scored the first three points, but NYU came back to tie 6-6. The Gothic Knights followed by scoring the next three points, but again NYU pulled into a tie at 9-9. The Violets soon broke a 10-10 deadlock by scoring the next four points and taking the lead for the first time in the set. They did not trail again as the lead rose to 10 points en route to the straight-set victory.
"I thought we brought intensity and determination to the court today," said Head Coach
Jolie Ward. "If you don't play well, your season is over. Now we get a chance to move forward and compete for a championship."

Gretchen Cash each had 10 kills to lead the Violets. Ellis recorded a .625 attack percentage.

Annie Singh contributed nine kills and shot .500.
"We were very strong and proficent at the net," Ward added.

Grace Napolitano (11) each had double-digit digs.
The Violets have now advanced to the quarterfinals of the ECAC Championship. They will face Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham, a straight-set winner over Arcadia University on Wednesday, on Saturday, November 12. All of the quarterfinal matches will be played at Lebanon Valley College in Annville, PA. The Violets and Devils are scheduled to play at 6:00 pm. The semifinals and finals will be played on Sunday.
