The New York University men's soccer team defeated University Athletic Association (UAA) opponent University of Rochester by a score of 1-0 on Friday, October 28, at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY.
NYU improved to 2-3 in UAA play on the season and upped its overall record to 8-6-2. It was the squad's first victory of the season over a ranked opponent, as the Yellowjackets came into the contest ranked #16 in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll.
"Today's game was a total team win," said NYU Assistant Coach
Ryan Finnigan. "Every player carried out his role and defensive responsibility."
Owen Smith scored the game's only goal just over seven minutes into the contest. He connected on a pass from
Robert Shellow and was able to put the ball past the Rochester goalkeeper.
The majority of the game going forward was played on the NYU defensive half of the field. But, the Yellowjackets were unable to come up with any offense, only totaling one shot on goal in the contest. Rochester out-shot NYU 6-4, but the Violets held a 3-1 advantage in shots on goal.
Tristan Medios-Simon led the NYU attack, tallying a pair of shots, both of which were on target.
"We are proud of our guys for getting it done today," added Finnigan. "We also know we have plenty of places we can keep improving."
The squad returns to action on Sunday, October 30, when they take on Emory University back at Gaelic Park. Kickoff against the Eagles is slated for 1:30pm.
