The New York University men's soccer team defeated SUNY Maritime 2-0 on Thursday, October 20, in Throggs Neck, NY.
NYU improved to 6-6-2 on the season while the Privateers are now 7-10-0.
Both of the Violets' goals came late in the first half. NYU's first tally was scored off the foot of
Tristan Medios-Simon, who connected on a cross from
Robert Shellow.
The Violets doubled their lead to 2-0 on a goal from
Owen Smith with less than three minutes left in the half. Smith's goal was his third of the season and was set up by
Nic Notaro.
"We strive every game to score first," explained Head Coach
Kim Wyant. "That makes it more likely we can put the other team on their heels and get ourselves into a rhythm."
NYU outshot Martime 17-7 in the win, including 6-1 in shots on target.
Lucas Doucette stopped the only shot he faced to earn the shutout for NYU.
"We moved
Bryan Walsh from outside to center forward, and he has been very active in winning 50-50 balls up top and helping us keep possession in our half of the field," Wyant said.
Highlights:
- Medios-Simon's goal was his team-best seventh of the season.
- NYU's two goal scorers -Medios-Simon and Smith- combined for nine shots in the win. Each placed two on net.
- The shutout was NYU's second of the season.
"We're striving to put back-to-back wins together for the first time this season," Wyant revealed. "Now, we will have an opportunity to do that on Sunday."
The Violets will be back on the pitch this Sunday, October 23, when they take on York College (NY). Kickoff is slated for 3:00 pm at Aviator Field in Brooklyn, NY.
