The New York University women's soccer team defeated Stevens Institute of Technology 1-0 in overtime in the second
round of the Stevens Engineering Cup on Sunday afternoon, September 13, in Hoboken, NJ.
The Violets (3-1) and Ducks (3-2) showcased some stiff defensive play throughout regulation, including a season-high 10 saves from NYU goalkeeper
Cassie Steinberg.
Following the first two periods, the squads headed to overtime where the Violets attempted the only two shots of the extra time.
Julie Glover then took matters into her own hands (make that feet), blasting a shot from about 30 yards out of the Stevens net and scoring the game's only goal in the 100th minute.
"Julie's goal in overtime was outstanding," said Head Coach
Michele Canning. "The whole team rallied to finish out a challenging weekend on the road."
HIGHLIGHTS:- Steinberg's win marks her third shutout of the season. In addition, her 10 saves were the second highest total of her career.
- Stevens outshot NYU 14-9, including 10-4 in shots on goal, but the Violets' backline remained strong throughout the shutout effort.
- The victory was NYU's second in two days, having defeated Whitman College 2-0 on Saturday in the opening round of the Stevens Engineering Cup.
"We are extremely happy to come out of the weekend with two road wins," Canning said.
The Violets will return to the pitch for their second home match of the season on Thursday evening, September 17, when they host DeSales University at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY, at 7:00pm.
