Women's Soccer Wins Opener

NYU Campaign Begins with Shutout of Johnson & Wales

The New York University women's soccer team opened its 2015 season with a 3-0 win over Johnson & Wales University on Tuesday, September 1, at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY.

McKennah Spagnola led the way for NYU, scoring two goals

The Violets (1-0) got on the board early as Teresa Fazio took a cross from Maddy Clappin and placed it into the back of the net with only 6:08 gone in the game. NYU's first-half scoring wasn't done yet as Spagnola scored on an assist from Melissa Menta at the 21:37 mark.

NYU scored the only goal of the second half when Spagnola again came through, this time putting it in off her chest on a cross from Fazio at 52:25.

It was an uneventful game for Violet goalkeeper Cassie Steinberg, who recorded the shutout without facing a shot from the Wildcats (0-1)

"I just got lucky. My teammates set me up," Spagnola said. "It was cool. A great way to start the season."

HIGHLIGHTS:

- NYU recorded 26 shots, 11 of them on goal, and had a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks.

- Spagnola took a game-high five shots, while Fazio had three

- Wildcats' goalkeeper Alex Place recorded eight saves.

"It's a really great start for us.I was excited to see the things we've been working on in preseason show up in the game," said Head Coach Michele Canning. "There were also some strong individual performances, as well."

The Violets return to action this Saturday, September 5, when they travel to Poughkeepsie, NY, to face Vassar College. The contest against the Brewers is set to begin at 1:00 PM.
