Baseball Falls to Skidmore

Denison Strikes Out Seven in Loss

The New York University baseball team dropped the finale of a three-game series 10-7 against Skidmore College on Saturday, April 4, in Saratoga Springs, NY.

NYU (7-14) scored the first two runs of the contest in the top of the first inning without getting a hit. Adrian Spitz struck out but reached on a passed ball and Christian Bloom reached on an error. Spitiz would score on a passed ball before Sy Cohen grounded into an RBI fielder's choice to plate Bloom.

The Violets would increase their lead to 6-1 with runs in the third, fifth and sixth innings. In the third inning, Scott Hilbrandt singled home Jonathan Iaione and in the fifth, NYU plated a run off of a sacrifice fly from Cohen. The two-run sixth included an RBI double off the left field wall from Jeremy Wayne.

Skidmore (6-8) would rally to score six runs in the home half of the sixth to take a 7-6 lead.

NYU bounced back, however, scoring a run in the top of the seventh on an RBI single from Hilbrandt to tie the game.

The game would not remain tied for long as the Thoroughbreds tallied two runs in the bottom of the seventh and a run in the bottom of the eighth secure a 10-7 victory in the rubber-match of the series.

Chase Denison started his seventh game of the season on the mound for NYU and struck out a career-high seven Skidmore hitters. Matthew Millus continued his impressive season on the mound as well, throwing a scoreless inning out of the bullpen to improve his ERA to 1.54.

Highlights:

- Iaione was 2-for-3 on the day and also reached safely on two walks. The freshman scored two runs, as well.

- Hilbrandt led the sqaud with three hits on the afternoon.

- Spitz stole two bases on the afternoon. The sophomore has a team-best 13 stolen bases on the season.

- Bloom scored twice and stole his 10th base of the season.

- NYU pitchers combined to strike out 10 Skidmore hitters.

The Violets will be back in action on Tuesday, April 7, against the College of Mount Saint Vincent. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm at MCU Park in Brooklyn. Live Stats will be available.
